Twenty-four schoolgirls kidnapped from Government Girls Secondary School, Maga, in Kebbi State have regained their freedom after several days in captivity.

The Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, confirmed their release in a statement on Tuesday.

The students were abducted on November 17, 2025, when terrorists launched an early-morning attack on the school shortly after a military detachment reportedly left the premises. The incident claimed the life of a school official and left a security guard injured.

According to Onanuga, President Bola Tinubu expressed relief at the rescue of the girls and commended security agencies for their efforts in securing their release.

He noted that the Kebbi abduction triggered copycat attacks in Eruku, Kwara State, and Papiri, Niger State. All 38 victims kidnapped in Eruku were freed on Sunday, while the Niger State chapter of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) reported that 50 of the missing students from St. Mary’s School, Papiri, were later found in their homes.

President Tinubu applauded the security forces for the progress made but urged them to intensify efforts to rescue the remaining victims still in captivity.

“I am relieved that all the 24 girls have been accounted for. Now, we must, as a matter of urgency, put more boots on the ground in vulnerable areas to avert further incidents of kidnapping. My government will offer all the assistance needed to achieve this,” the President said.
