The Kano State Film and Video Censorship Board has indefinitely shut down eight entertainment centres for violating the state’s cultural and moral standards.
Executive Secretary of the board, Abba El-Mustapha, announced the ban on Wednesday, saying the move aims to restore order and discipline in the state’s entertainment sector.
“The affected centres have repeatedly disregarded our guidelines. This action is necessary to maintain public decency,” he said.
Centres affected include:
Hamdala Entertainment – Ungoggo
Lady J Entertainment – Sanya Olu
Dan Hausa Entertainment – Sanya Olu
Ni’ima Entertainment – Zungeru
Babbangida Entertainment – Balatus
Harsashi Entertainment – Ebedi Sabon Gari
Wazobiya Entertainment – Sanya Olu
El-Mustapha warned that any attempt to reopen under new names would face prosecution. He added that the centres were involved in activities deemed inappropriate, including hosting late-night events and showing uncensored content.
This action comes shortly after the board suspended several Hausa drama series on YouTube and local TV for similar violations.
El-Mustapha clarified that the board’s goal isn’t to suppress artistic expression but to promote content that aligns with Kano’s values. “We support creativity, but it must respect our cultural and religious identity,” he said.
The board said it would continue to engage with content creators through training and dialogue to foster a compliant and responsible entertainment industry.
