A 20-year-old woman in Wales has recounted the terrifying moment she feared for her life after a Nigerian man who offered to walk her home from a night out dragged her into a wooded area and raped her. The woman, whose identity has been withheld, said she believed she might be killed during the attack in Wrexham on September 7, 2025. Her account was published by the Daily Mail on Wednesday, months after her attacker, Gift Oladele, 24, was sentenced to 17 years in prison for rape and sexual assault. Oladele approached the woman as she walked home and told her he was heading in the same direction. He then offered to accompany her. She said the situation changed when they reached an isolated location, where Oladele grabbed her and forced her into a wooded area. “He was a lot bigger than I was – I tried pushing him away, but he overpowered me,” she said. The woman said she realised that trying to fight back could put her life at greater risk. “My brain just switched into survival mode – it was weird. It was either I do what he says, and I get home to my mum, or he is going to kill me,” she recalled. She said Oladele assaulted her and struck her six times in the head, leaving bruises on her body. According to the victim, her attacker also threatened her after the assault, warning that he would find her if she reported the incident. She said he further threatened to photograph her and circulate the images online. Despite the threats, she told her parents about the attack immediately after reaching home at around 3.30am. Her father then contacted the police. Oladele was arrested the following day at his cousin's home in Wrexham. Police found that he had attempted to conceal a mobile phone, which investigators later discovered contained searches relating to sexual attacks. Oladele was convicted at Mold Crown Court in March after denying rape and sexual assault and claiming that the victim had consented. He was subsequently sentenced at Caernarfon Crown Court to 17 years in prison, with an additional eight years on extended licence. The court also imposed an indefinite Sexual Harm Prevention Order and a lifetime restraining order protecting the victim. The woman said the experience had left lasting psychological and physical effects, including difficulties eating and periods of severe emotional distress. “I felt numb. I was hysterical. My brain couldn’t figure out what had just happened,” she said. She added: “There were numerous times a day when I would be hysterically crying because I didn’t want to be here anymore.” Oladele was already on bail over another rape allegation in Manchester from November 2024 when he attacked the woman in Wrexham. He had also previously been jailed in 2022 for a sexually motivated attack. The Nigerian citizen, who was born in Italy, had previously successfully challenged attempts by UK authorities to deport him to Nigeria. After an earlier prison sentence, he appealed against deportation on the grounds that his removal would violate his right to private and family life under Article 8 of the European Convention on Human Rights. An immigration tribunal ruled that deportation would be disproportionate, while two subsequent Home Office appeals were rejected. The victim's mother questioned why her daughter's rights had not received similar consideration. “Where are my daughter’s rights? That’s what I want to know. She has the right to walk home after a night out without being raped,” she said. Wrexham Chief Inspector Caroline Mullen-Hurst described Oladele as “a dangerous predator” and praised the victim for her courage in reporting the crime. She said the defendant had shown no remorse and that the legal process had required the victim to relive the traumatic experience during the trial.
