Tears and shock have engulfed friends, family, and the Fisk University community after Oluwalayomi “Layo” Fadero, a 23-year-old Nigerian graduate, was killed in a tragic crash in Nashville, Tennessee last Friday.
Fadero, who had recently completed her degree at Fisk University and was preparing to pursue an accelerated nursing program, was driving along Murfreesboro Pike when a wrong-way driver fleeing police struck her car on the driver’s side, killing her instantly.
Authorities identified the suspect as Ray Eugene Padgett, 52, who was attempting to evade arrest after stealing a Ford F-250 truck from a North Nashville car lot earlier that day. Police said Padgett rammed the truck owner’s vehicle and later collided with an unmarked police SUV before the fatal crash. The pursuit reportedly lasted about five minutes, with speeds reaching 80 miles per hour.
“At around 2:30 p.m., the suspect drove into oncoming traffic and struck the victim’s vehicle,” Metro Nashville Police confirmed. The force of the collision sent Fadero’s car roughly 100 yards into a ditch.
Padgett, who was on parole at the time of the incident and has at least 20 prior convictions across five Tennessee counties, was later hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries before being taken into custody. He now faces multiple felony charges, including criminally negligent homicide, vehicular homicide by recklessness, attempted criminal homicide, and reckless endangerment.
Fadero’s sudden death has left her loved ones and colleagues devastated. Former professor Janet Walsh described her as “one of the most compassionate and kindest people you could ever meet,” while alumna Jessica Williams called the loss “heartbreaking,” particularly because it occurred so close to her home.
A makeshift memorial has been created at the crash site, and counseling support has been offered to students and staff at Fisk University. Meanwhile, supporters have raised over $13,000 through a fundraiser to help cover funeral expenses.
Authorities continue to investigate the crash and the circumstances leading up to the fatal collision, as the community mourns the untimely loss of a bright young graduate whose life was cut tragically short.
