The Nigerian Army has expressed outrage and sorrow over the death of Lieutenant Samson Haruna, the Regimental Medical Officer of the 6 Battalion, who was allegedly killed by his wife during a domestic altercation at Wellington Bassey Barracks, Ibagwa, Akwa Ibom State.
According to a statement issued in Uyo on Tuesday by the Assistant Director of Army Public Relations, 2 Brigade, Captain Lawal Muhammad, the incident occurred on September 22, 2025, following a heated disagreement between the officer and his wife, Mrs. Retyit Obadiah Dalong Samson Haruna.
The Army said preliminary investigations revealed that the altercation escalated when Mrs. Haruna allegedly set fire to household items, which quickly spread and engulfed the officer, leading to severe burns.
“Lieutenant Haruna was immediately attended to at the Battalion Medical Facility and later transferred to the University of Uyo Teaching Hospital for further treatment, where he unfortunately passed away,” the statement read.
The Nigerian Army condemned the act in strong terms, describing it as tragic and avoidable. “The Nigerian Army strongly condemns this act of domestic violence, recognising the imperative of peaceful coexistence and mutual respect within families,” it said.
The statement added that the Army has initiated a full investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident and called for calm pending the outcome of the Military Police inquiry.
“The Nigerian Army will continue to promote healthy family relationships, discourage domestic violence, and foster a culture of respect and dialogue within military and civilian communities,” Captain Muhammad stated.
Lieutenant Haruna’s death has left colleagues and residents of Wellington Bassey Barracks in shock, with many describing him as a dedicated officer and a gentle personality.
The Army has assured that justice will be served in accordance with the law and reiterated its commitment to supporting the bereaved family during this difficult time.
