The Lagos State Police Command has intensified efforts to track down the gunmen responsible for the killing of the Organising Secretary of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), Toba Ajiboye, popularly known as Toba Ijaya.

Ajiboye was reportedly shot by unidentified assailants along Ikorodu Road while returning from Fadeyi on Monday.

Witnesses said the attackers intercepted his vehicle and opened fire, leaving the car extensively damaged by bullets. He was subsequently rushed to St. Nicholas Hospital on Lagos Island, where he later died from injuries sustained during the attack.

The incident sparked tension at the hospital as supporters and associates of the slain union official reportedly clashed with security operatives over attempts to remove his body after his death was confirmed.

Confirming the development, the Lagos State Police Command said a full-scale investigation had commenced and assured residents that efforts were underway to apprehend those behind the attack.

Police spokesperson CSP Benjamin Hundeyin said officers had also been deployed to sensitive locations across the state to prevent any possible breakdown of law and order.

“The investigation is ongoing, and efforts are being intensified to identify and arrest the perpetrators. Adequate security has also been put in place to maintain peace and public order,” he said.

Ajiboye's death has sent shockwaves through the transport union community, where he was regarded as a prominent figure in the Lagos NURTW structure.

Reacting to the incident, Lagos NURTW Chairman, Mustapha Adekunle, popularly known as Sego, described the killing as a devastating loss to the union.

In a tribute, Adekunle said the deceased was a loyal associate and dedicated union leader whose contributions would not be forgotten.

“The sudden loss of Comrade Toba Ajiboye is deeply painful. He was dependable, committed and always willing to serve,” he said.

According to him, Ajiboye played a key role in the affairs of the union and remained steadfast in his support for the organisation and its leadership.

He added that the late union official's loyalty, friendship and commitment to the transport workers' body would continue to be remembered by colleagues and associates.

The motive behind the attack remains unclear, while police authorities have vowed to bring those responsible to justice. Investigations are continuing.
