The Kebbi State Government has ordered the immediate closure of all public and private secondary schools across the state in response to mounting security threats, days after terrorists attacked a girls’ secondary school in Maga, killing a school official and abducting 25 students.
TAT News earlier reported that gunmen stormed the Government Girls Comprehensive Senior Secondary School (GGCSS), Maga, in Danko/Wasagu Local Government Area, where they killed the Vice Principal, Malam Hassan Makuku, and whisked away the students under the cover of darkness.
The state’s sweeping shutdown also extends to several tertiary institutions, with the exception of the College of Nursing Sciences and Midwifery, Birnin Kebbi, which will continue operations.
The directive was announced on Sunday through a joint statement by the Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Halima Bande, and the Commissioner for Higher Education, Issa Abubakar-Tunga.
Bande said the decision followed a review of “recent disturbing cases of attacks” and noted that the safety of students and school staff had become a top priority.
“At this critical moment, we must place the safety of our children above all else. Closing all secondary schools, both public and private, is a necessary precaution to prevent further tragedy,” she said.
The shutdown affects hundreds of schools across Kebbi’s 21 local government areas, including boarding schools, day schools, and privately run institutions.
Commissioner Abubakar-Tunga explained that the order was based on security recommendations warning of potential coordinated attacks on educational facilities.
“We cannot expose young learners to avoidable risks. All affected institutions must comply immediately. A new resumption date will be announced once the security environment improves,” he stated.
The tertiary institutions affected include:
Kebbi State Polytechnic, Dakingari
Abdullahi Fodio University of Science and Technology, Aliero
College of Health Sciences and Technology, Jega
Adamu Augie College of Education, Argungu
School of Remedial Studies, Yauri
Only the College of Nursing Sciences and Midwifery in Birnin Kebbi is exempted from the closure.
The commissioners urged school authorities, parents, and residents to remain calm and cooperate with government directives, assuring that security agencies are intensifying operations to restore safety across the state.
