The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has secured the remand of three suspects accused of defrauding victims of about N30 million under the guise of helping them obtain Canadian visas and travel abroad.
The suspects were arraigned before the Oyo State High Court in Ibadan by the commission’s Ibadan Zonal Directorate.
Two of the defendants, Emmanuel Serah Motunrayo and Awotunde Olugbenga, were accused of collecting N23.4 million from Oluwatobi Adeoluwa Iyanda and Oyewale Tunji Bello after allegedly promising to facilitate their Canadian visas and overseas travel.
The EFCC further alleged that the suspects forged a Canadian visa dated June 20, 2025, bearing Travel Document Number B011745448 in Iyanda’s name.
One of the counts alleged that the defendants obtained N527,000 from Iyanda on March 1, 2025, after falsely claiming they would secure a valid Canadian visa and flight ticket for him.
The commission said the representation was false and was made with the intention to defraud.
The defendants were also accused of producing a document purporting to be a Canadian visa issued by the Government of Canada.
The alleged offences relate to obtaining money by false pretence and forgery under relevant provisions of the Criminal Code Law of Oyo State and the Criminal Code Act.
Both suspects pleaded not guilty to the charges.
Following their pleas, Justice Olusola Adetujoye ordered that they be remanded at the Agodi Correctional Centre.
The judge adjourned proceedings until August 26 for hearing of their bail applications.
In another case, the EFCC arraigned Idowu Olugbemi Sunday over an alleged N6.65 million visa fraud involving Okanlawon Tunji Ajao.
The commission alleged that Sunday collected the money from Ajao between June 2025 and January 2026 after representing that he would secure Canadian visas for Ajao and members of his family.
The EFCC said the defendant knew the representation was false when he made it.
The charge was filed under Section 1(3) of the Advance Fee Fraud and Other Fraud Related Offences Act, 2006.
Sunday pleaded not guilty when the charge was read to him.
Justice Adetujoye ordered that he also be remanded at the Agodi Correctional Centre and fixed August 26 for hearing of his bail application.
The cases form part of the EFCC’s ongoing prosecution of alleged fraudulent activities involving international travel, visa procurement and advance-fee schemes.
