Manchester City have been drawn against six-time Champions League winners Real Madrid in the last 16 of this season’s UEFA Champions League, while Chelsea will take on holders Paris Saint-Germain.
Premier League leaders Arsenal, who finished their group stage with a perfect record, will face German side Bayer Leverkusen in what appears to be a favorable tie for Mikel Arteta’s side.
Chelsea, meanwhile, avoided an all-English clash with Newcastle United and will instead meet Spanish champions Barcelona.
Liverpool, six-time European champions, will play Turkish side Galatasaray, and Tottenham Hotspur have been paired with Atletico Madrid for their round of 16 encounter.
This marks the fifth consecutive season that Manchester City and Real Madrid have met in the knockout stages of Europe’s premier club competition.
The first legs of the round of 16 are scheduled for March 10 and 11, with return legs on March 17 and 18. Exact kick-off times are expected to be announced on Friday night.
The draw has been described by analysts as one of the toughest in recent memory for Premier League sides. Should City defeat Real Madrid, they will face either Bayern Munich or Atalanta in the quarter-finals, while Chelsea and Liverpool could meet in the last eight if they overcome PSG and Galatasaray respectively.
Arsenal, meanwhile, could face either Bodo/Glimt or Sporting in the quarter-finals, with a potential semi-final set to feature one of Newcastle, Barcelona, Atletico Madrid, or Tottenham.
