Charlton Athletic has announced the tragic death of Ethan Ade-Oduwale, a 10-year-old Nigerian-born footballer in the club’s academy, prompting an outpouring of grief across the English football community.
In a statement released on Monday, the Championship club expressed deep sorrow over the loss of the young Under-10s player, describing him as an exceptional talent and a beloved member of the academy.
“Ethan’s smile, energy, and enthusiasm for football will always be remembered by his teammates and the staff within the academy,” the club said. “From the moment he stepped onto the pitch at Sparrows Lane, his passion and determination shone through every session. His love for the game will forever remain with us.”
Charlton described the young midfielder as “a shining example of what youth football should embody – a deep love for the game, unwavering respect for others, and strong bonds with teammates.”
The heartbreaking news sparked tributes from clubs across England. Manchester United wrote on X (formerly Twitter): “Sending our condolences to Ethan’s friends and family, and everyone connected with Charlton, following this tragic news.”
Leyton Orient also paid tribute, stating: “All at Leyton Orient send our sincerest condolences to all of Ethan’s family and friends, and everyone at Charlton Athletic during this terribly sad time. Rest in peace, Ethan.”
Charlton chairman Gavin Carter said the entire club was devastated. “Our thoughts, heartfelt condolences, and full support are with Ethan’s parents and family,” he said. “We kindly ask that their privacy—and that of Ethan’s friends, teammates, and the staff who worked closely with him—be respected during this incredibly difficult time.”
Academy manager Tom Pell said discussions were underway on how best to honour Ethan’s memory. “We are devastated by this loss,” he said, adding that the club would continue to support everyone affected by the tragedy.
