Arsenal are through to the UEFA Champions League final for the first time in 20 years after a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Atlético Madrid at the Emirates Stadium on Tuesday night.

The win sealed a 2-1 aggregate success for Mikel Arteta’s side, with Bukayo Saka’s first-half goal proving the difference in a tense semi-final second leg that was high on intensity but short on clear chances.

With the tie finely balanced, Saka struck in the 44th minute to hand Arsenal the advantage, finishing off a move that ultimately decided the contest. It was a moment of quality in an otherwise cagey encounter, as both sides prioritised defensive discipline.

Atlético, managed by Diego Simeone, attempted to respond after the break but found it difficult to break down a well-organised Arsenal defence. The visitors’ best opportunity fell late in the game, but a poor connection from Alexander Sørloth summed up a frustrating night for the Spanish side.

Arsenal, meanwhile, showed composure and maturity in managing the closing stages, with goalkeeper David Raya and his backline standing firm under late pressure. The Gunners controlled the tempo and limited Atlético’s attacking threat as the clock ticked down.

Tempers flared in stoppage time, with both Arteta and Simeone booked following heated exchanges on the touchline, reflecting the high stakes of the encounter. However, Arsenal remained focused to see out the result and secure their place in the final.

The final whistle sparked celebrations across the Emirates, as the North London club confirmed only the second Champions League final appearance in their history, and their first since 2006.

Arteta’s men will now face either Paris Saint-Germain or Bayern Munich in the final on May 30, as they look to win Europe’s premier club competition for the first time.
