Manchester United have sacked manager Ruben Amorim after a disappointing stint that saw the club languish sixth in the Premier League.

The announcement came on Monday, with the club confirming that Darren Fletcher - former Scotland international and current under-18s coach - will take temporary charge for Wednesday’s match.

Amorim’s final outing was Monday’s 1-1 draw at Leeds, a result that reflected the struggles of his tenure. After the game, the Portuguese tactician made comments suggesting friction behind the scenes:

“I came here to be the manager, not just the coach. Every department - scouting, sporting director -  must do their job. I will do mine for 18 months, and then we move on. That was the deal.”

Appointed in November 2024, Amorim was hailed for his tactical intelligence during his time at Sporting CP but found it difficult to implement his ideas at Old Trafford. His preferred 3-4-3 formation often drew criticism, with inconsistent performances frustrating fans and club insiders alike.

United endured a challenging 2024-25 season, finishing 15th in the Premier League, only four points clear of relegation. The club’s decision to relieve Amorim of his duties underscores the ongoing instability in the managerial role at Old Trafford.

Speculation is already mounting over potential replacements who can steer Manchester United back toward domestic and European contention.
