Godwin Obaseki, Edo State governor, has commended the Super Eagles of Nigeria for defeating host nation, Ivory Coast in Nations Cup encounter on Thursday.
I heartily congratulate the Super Eagles of Nigeria for their well-deserved victory over the host nation, Ivory Coast in their second AFCON Group A match," the governor said via his X handle, @GovernorObasekim
"The Super Eagles showed they were a superior team, showcasing their exceptional talent, skills and resilience, leading to the 1-0 win over the Elephants of Côte d'Ivoire.
"As they progress in the competition, I charge them to continue on their impressive run so they can reclaim Nigeria’s top spot in continental football."
The Eagles pulled a big upset by beating the Africa Cup of Nations host nation through captain Troost Ekong penalty 10 minutes into the second half, before a biased crowd rooting for the Elephants.
The host beat Guinea Bissau 2-0 in their opening encounter, while Nigeria drew one all with Equatorial Guinea.
On Thursday, Equatorial Guinea beat Guinea Bissau 4-2 to earn four points and sit top of the group, before Nigeria achieved 1-0 victory against the Ivorians to go second on same number of points.
The result left the AFCON hosts, with three points, at high risk of elimination from this tournament at the group stage.
