Super Falcons captain, Rasheedat Ajibade, has expressed frustration over the non-payment of the $100,000 cash reward and other bonuses promised to the team after their Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) success.
Speaking on an upcoming episode of With Chude, hosted by media personality Chude Jideonwo, Ajibade disclosed that despite repeated assurances from the relevant authorities, the players are yet to receive any of the pledged funds.
“We have not received our money oo. Please, they have not paid. All the promises you heard back and forth, we have not received anything,” she said.
She added that although they had been informed the funds were already set aside, no payment had reached them.
“People are begging. We have not received it. When they pay it, you will see. Even our match bonuses and everything… everything is still a work in progress,” she stated.
In July 2024, following the Falcons’ record 10th WAFCON title in Morocco, President Bola Tinubu announced a $100,000 cash gift for each player, along with other financial rewards, to honour their achievement.
Ajibade also reflected on her early football journey, revealing she spent a decade at FC Robo Queens in the Nigeria Women’s Football League without earning a salary, describing the experience as “a tough moment.”
She recounted growing up in Mushin, Lagos, in a compound with almost 100 residents, where she washed toilets and bathrooms to earn money.
Ajibade’s career took her from FC Robo Queens to Norway’s Avaldsnes IL at the age of 17, before joining Atlético Madrid Femenino in 2021.
