Peter Obi, former governor of Anambra State and 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, has condemned the Federal Government for failing to pay the Super Eagles, who reportedly boycotted training ahead of Thursday’s crucial 2026 FIFA World Cup playoff against Gabon.
Obi described the situation as “shameful” and a sign of national neglect, arguing that it sends the wrong message to Nigerian youths about dedication and service.
“It is deeply disappointing that our national team, who tirelessly represent Nigeria on the world stage, are owed their allowances,” Obi said. “We always find funds for extravagant projects and political patronage, yet those who serve the country with pride are neglected.”
He urged the government and football authorities to resolve the matter immediately, insisting that athletes deserve to be treated with respect and paid promptly. “When hard work and patriotism are not rewarded, it discourages our youth from striving for excellence,” he added.
The Super Eagles’ decision to skip training has raised concerns about their preparation for the high-stakes World Cup playoff against Gabon, highlighting ongoing frustrations over delayed payments and poor welfare arrangements for national sports teams.
