Super Eagles winger Samuel Chukwueze has suffered a personal loss with the death of his mother, Mrs Sarah Chukwueze, who passed away after a brief illness.

The sad news was first shared by the footballer’s brother, David Chukwueze, through emotional posts on Instagram. While Samuel Chukwueze has yet to make a public statement, the messages reflected the family’s deep pain and sense of disbelief.

In one post, David wrote, “Can’t even post your picture to say RIP mum,” and in another, he added, “My forever love just left me without saying goodbye.” He also lamented that their late mother did not live to hold her grandchild.

The National Sports Commission (NSC) later confirmed the death in an official statement, saying it was deeply saddened by the loss of Mrs Chukwueze. The Commission noted that the passing had been publicly announced by members of the family and described the late matriarch as a strong pillar behind her son’s football career.

“Across Nigerian sport, family remains central to the character and resilience of our elite athletes,” the NSC said, adding that Mrs Chukwueze’s support and influence were widely acknowledged within the sports community.

The Commission expressed its condolences to the Super Eagles winger and his family, assuring them of its support during the period of mourning.

Chukwueze recently represented Nigeria at the Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco, where the Super Eagles finished third. He has not yet commented publicly on his mother’s passing.

The tragedy comes shortly after another blow to the national team, following the death of Super Eagles captain Wilfred Ndidi’s father, Sunday Ndidi, in a road accident in Delta State, underscoring a difficult period for the Nigerian football family.
