Germany is on the verge of appointing Jurgen Klopp as head coach of its men's national football team, with the German Football Association (DFB) expected to officially unveil the former Liverpool manager on Friday.
The federation has invited the media to a press conference at its Frankfurt headquarters but has not disclosed the agenda. However, reports in Germany indicate the event is expected to confirm Klopp's appointment after the DFB completes the required internal approval process.
Klopp is expected to sign a contract running until the 2030 FIFA World Cup, giving him a long-term mandate to rebuild one of international football's most successful national teams.
The appointment follows Germany's disappointing campaign at the 2026 World Cup, where the four-time champions were eliminated in the Round of 32 after a penalty shootout defeat to Paraguay. The poor outing led to the dismissal of Julian Nagelsmann and intensified calls for an experienced manager capable of restoring the country's footballing fortunes.
Germany's decline on the global stage has been evident over the past decade. Since winning the World Cup in Brazil in 2014, the Mannschaft have failed to progress beyond the group stage at the 2018 and 2022 editions and have struggled to make a significant impact in subsequent major tournaments.
Klopp arrives with one of the strongest managerial résumés in modern football. He first made his mark at Mainz before guiding Borussia Dortmund to two Bundesliga titles and a UEFA Champions League final.
His reputation reached greater heights during his nine-year spell at Liverpool, where he ended the club's 30-year wait for a league title by winning the Premier League in 2020. He also led the Reds to Champions League glory, the FIFA Club World Cup, FA Cup and League Cup titles, establishing himself as one of the game's most accomplished coaches.
After leaving Liverpool in 2024, Klopp joined Red Bull as Head of Global Soccer, overseeing the sporting operations of the company's football clubs, including RB Leipzig, Red Bull Salzburg and the New York Red Bulls.
German media reports indicate Red Bull has agreed to release him from that role without demanding a transfer fee. Instead, the arrangement reportedly includes a donation of one million euros to the Wings for Life Foundation, a charity that funds research into spinal cord injuries.
If confirmed, Klopp will inherit the responsibility of rebuilding Germany into genuine contenders for major honours, with preparations for the 2028 European Championship and the 2030 World Cup expected to dominate the early years of his tenure.
