Tuchel names England World Cup squad, backs balance over star power

England coach Thomas Tuchel has unveiled his 26-man squad for the FIFA World Cup, with Bukayo Saka, Eberechi Eze and Noni Madueke among the headline inclusions, while several high-profile names failed to make the final cut.

Tuchel on Friday defended his selection choices, insisting that building the right team dynamic was more important than simply assembling the country’s biggest stars.

“My job is not necessarily to select the 26 most talented players,” the England manager said at his squad announcement press conference. “We picked the best possible team.”

Among the most notable omissions were Phil Foden, Cole Palmer and Trent Alexander-Arnold, decisions that immediately sparked debate among supporters.

Tuchel, however, maintained that squad harmony, tactical balance and adaptability were central to his thinking ahead of the tournament.

“It is about building a brotherhood,” he said. “It is about building excitement and a certain energy. Once we get this energy right, everything is possible.”

The German tactician included a mixture of youth and experience, with captain Harry Kane leading the attacking options alongside Ivan Toney and Ollie Watkins.

Explaining Toney’s selection, Tuchel said the striker possesses qualities capable of changing games at the highest level.

“Toney has very special skills that could help us,” he noted.

In midfield, Jude Bellingham, Declan Rice, Morgan Rogers and Kobbie Mainoo were selected, while veteran Jordan Henderson also retained his place.

Tuchel praised the relationship between Bellingham and Rogers, dismissing concerns about competition for places.

“I think it is possible to compete as accomplices and you don't have to be enemies,” he said. “I have no doubt that Jude and Morgan will get along very well and both will be decisive for us.”

At the back, the squad includes John Stones, Marc Guehi, Ezri Konsa and Djed Spence.

Tuchel strongly defended the inclusion of Stones despite concerns over the defender’s recent lack of regular football.

“I believe he is a world-class player, an amazing character and a proven winner,” he said. “He knows how to adapt to a winning culture.”

On Spence, the former Chelsea F.C. boss described the full-back as offering qualities lacking elsewhere in the squad.

“He’s the fastest player in our squad and he loves defending one-on-one situations,” Tuchel said. “I can trust him.”

The England manager also hinted that squad rotation would play a key role during the group phase because of the tournament’s demanding conditions.

“It will be hot, humid and physically challenging,” he explained. “History shows it makes sense to rotate in the beginning of the tournament.”

Tuchel further revealed that young players Alex Scott, Rio Ngumoha and Josh King would join the camp to train with the senior squad during preparations.

England head into the tournament seeking to end a 60-year wait for a major international trophy, with Tuchel insisting his side would travel with belief and ambition.

“We will try to go all the way,” he declared. “We will try to win this tournament.”
