Country music legend and global cultural icon, Dolly Parton, has died at the age of 80 after a brief battle with cancer.
Parton reportedly died peacefully on Tuesday at the Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Center, surrounded by members of her family and loved ones.
Her death brings to an end a remarkable career that spanned more than six decades and established her as one of the most recognisable figures in music, entertainment, business and philanthropy.
Known for her distinctive voice, prolific songwriting and larger-than-life personality, Parton produced a catalogue of songs that became enduring classics, including Jolene, 9 to 5, I Will Always Love You and Coat of Many Colors. She also recorded celebrated duets with other major artistes, including the late Kenny Rogers.
In a statement released through her representative, Parton's team said she devoted her life to bringing joy, hope and kindness to others.
“Our beloved Dolly Parton spent her life and career bringing joy, laughter, hope and integrity into everything she touched,” the statement said.
It added that her generosity touched countless lives, pointing to the hundreds of millions of books distributed through her Imagination Library literacy programme and her support for medical research, including research connected to a lifesaving vaccine.
“After bravely facing a brief battle with cancer, Dolly departed her Earthly life today at the Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Center surrounded by loved ones,” the statement said.
Parton was born on January 19, 1946, in Sevier County, Tennessee, and was raised in a large family in the Smoky Mountains. She rose from humble beginnings to become one of the most successful entertainers of her generation.
Her influence extended far beyond country music. She appeared in a number of popular films, including 9 to 5, Steel Magnolias and The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas, while also becoming a successful entrepreneur and philanthropist.
Among her most enduring legacies is the Dolly Parton's Imagination Library, a literacy initiative that provides free books to children.
Country Music Hall of Fame chief executive Kyle Young described Parton as a figure whose legacy was rooted in her humanity rather than celebrity.
“Dolly Parton's legacy is not celebrity, but humanity,” Young said.
He described her as an important figure in Tennessee who used her wealth and influence to help others and “shared her soul in every note she sang.”
Tributes also came from fellow entertainers and public figures.
Television personality Kathie Lee Gifford recalled Parton as a close and generous friend who offered encouragement during difficult periods of her life.
Gifford said Parton had repeatedly encouraged her songwriting and urged her never to stop writing.
“She just encouraged me like crazy,” Gifford said while remembering the late music star.
Former US President Joe Biden also mourned Parton, describing her as an “American original” and a trailblazer who inspired millions.
Biden praised her work through the Imagination Library and her advocacy for women and equality, while highlighting her kindness towards people from all walks of life.
“Simply put, Dolly Parton was an American original,” Biden said.
“She was an inspiration to millions.”
Despite her enormous public profile, Parton spent much of her career avoiding partisan political battles. She repeatedly said she did not want to alienate fans by taking sides in American politics.
“I am not political, and I refuse to get caught up in political things,” she said in a 2020 interview.
Parton explained that she had supporters across the political divide and preferred to remain focused on entertainment.
During another interview in which she was pressed to comment on then-President Donald Trump, she declined to draw comparisons between him and the character of the abusive boss in 9 to 5.
“I’m not in politics, I’m an entertainer,” she said.
Parton maintained that position even as her status as a cultural icon increasingly made her a subject of political discussion.
With her death, the music industry has lost one of its most influential and enduring personalities — a performer whose songs crossed generations and whose philanthropic work touched millions of lives around the world.
Her music, films and humanitarian legacy are expected to continue influencing generations to come.
