Biafra separatist leader, Nnamdi Kanu, has commenced the formal filing of his defence in the terrorism case brought against him by the Federal Government, complying with a directive issued by the Federal High Court in Abuja.
Kanu is submitting his defence documents before Justice James Omotosho, who ordered that the court registry be temporarily set up inside the courtroom to ensure the process could be completed without further delay.
The development follows months of Kanu’s refusal to open his defence, with the IPOB leader insisting that the prosecution must first identify the exact terrorism provisions he is accused of breaching.
Lead counsel for the Federal Government, Adegboyega Awomolo, confirmed in court that he was prepared to receive the defence documents and respond in accordance with legal procedure.
Justice Omotosho briefly stood down proceedings for one hour to allow the filing to be concluded.
The filing represents a significant procedural step in a trial that has been marked by repeated adjournments and disputes over the legal basis of the charges.
