Presidential candidate of the National Democratic Coalition (NDC) for the 2027 general election, Mr Peter Obi, on Thursday met with the British High Commissioner to Nigeria, Dr Richard Montgomery, to discuss Nigeria's democratic journey, economic challenges and the need to strengthen key national institutions.
Obi, who disclosed details of the meeting in a statement, said the discussions also centred on ensuring that future elections in Nigeria are transparent, credible and reflect the wishes of the electorate.
According to the former Anambra State governor, both men exchanged views on issues critical to Nigeria's democratic and economic development.
"I met with the British High Commissioner to Nigeria, His Excellency Dr Richard Montgomery. We had a thoughtful discussion on the state of our democracy, the economy, the importance of strengthening our institutions, and the need to ensure that our elections remain free, fair, credible, and truly reflective of the will of the Nigerian people," Obi said.
The meeting also provided an opportunity for Obi to bid farewell to the British diplomat, whose tenure in Nigeria is expected to end next month.
Obi commended Montgomery for his contribution to deepening relations between Nigeria and the United Kingdom, describing his diplomatic engagement as constructive and beneficial to both countries.
He said the envoy had supported Nigeria's democratic growth and economic development throughout his stay in the country.
"As Dr Montgomery prepares to conclude his diplomatic assignment in Nigeria next month, I thanked him for his service and for the role he has played in strengthening the longstanding relationship between Nigeria and the United Kingdom. His time in Nigeria has been marked by constructive engagement and support for our democratic and economic development," he said.
The former governor also wished Montgomery success in his future endeavours and expressed confidence that the longstanding ties between Nigeria and the United Kingdom would continue to grow stronger.
"I wished him well as he prepares for his next assignment and thanked him for the friendship and cooperation he has extended to Nigeria throughout his tenure. I look forward to seeing the strong relationship between our two countries continue to grow," Obi added.
He ended the statement with his campaign refrain, "A New Nigeria is POssible."
The meeting comes amid increasing political activity ahead of the 2027 general election, as political leaders continue consultations on governance, electoral reforms, institutional strengthening and strategies for addressing Nigeria's economic challenges.
