The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has revealed that more than 1.5 million candidates scored below 200 marks in the 2025 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME).

According to the data released on Monday, out of the 1,955,069 candidates who sat for the examination, only 420,415 scored 200 and above — representing just about 21.5% of the total candidates. Less than 1% of candidates were able to score above 300.

JAMB also stated that 40,247 underage candidates were granted special permission to take the exam based on their academic potential. However, only 467 of them — about 1.16% — achieved scores that meet the board’s standard for exceptional ability. Their performance in subsequent assessment stages is still pending.

The board reported 97 confirmed cases of examination malpractice and disclosed that 2,157 candidates are under investigation for alleged misconduct. Meanwhile, 71,701 candidates were marked absent during the examination period.

Candidates who encountered biometric verification challenges are currently being reviewed, and those who are cleared will be rescheduled to retake the exam at designated centres.

JAMB also noted that results for a small group of candidates — including those who are visually impaired and others under special assessment categories — are still being processed.

The board announced that it will soon hold a press conference to officially release individual results and guide candidates on how to access their scores.
