A gang of armed kidnappers stormed Grow Homes Estate in the Chikakore area of Kubwa, a major suburb of Abuja, in the early hours of Monday, abducting several residents and holding the estate hostage for over an hour.

According to residents, the attack occurred between 12 a.m. and 1:30 a.m., catching many off guard as gunmen overpowered the local vigilante team guarding the area.

One eyewitness reported seeing a man and a woman being taken away by the attackers. However, the woman was later found within the estate at daybreak, reportedly released by the kidnappers under unclear circumstances.

As of press time, the exact number of victims taken during the raid could not be confirmed.

“The incident started around midnight. The gunmen were heavily armed and subdued our local security men. The police arrived around 1 a.m., and there was a heavy exchange of gunfire that lasted about 30 minutes,” a resident told reporters.

Community members have since called on the government and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Administration to improve infrastructure in the area, particularly the access road, to aid timely security response. They also appealed for the establishment of a police station within the estate to help deter future attacks.

Security agencies have yet to issue an official statement on the incident.
